Google Spam Update: August 2026.

If your calls or website enquiries went a bit up and down between 18–21 August, you weren’t imagining it. Google just rolled out another spam update (the third this year) and it’s now finished, all done, dusted.
Here’s what actually happened, and more importantly, what you should do about it.
What was the spam update all about?
Google ran an update to clean up spammy, low-quality sites in its search results. It started on 18 August and wrapped up on 21 August — just under 3 days, rolled out worldwide, in every language, all in one go.
There was no big announcement and no new rulebook, with no new spam policies published alongside it. In a nutshell, it was more of the same: cleaning up those who are implementing nefarious SEO tactics.
How this one compares to the others
This is Google’s third spam clean-up of 2026:
- March – a quick udpate completed in just one day.
- June – took a bit over 2 days, and came just after Google confirmed its spam rules also cover attempts to game AI Overviews and AI-generated answers, not just regular search listings (so a relatively concrete change)
- August – the slowest of the three, at just under 3 days.
Google hasn’t said whether this latest one specifically targeted people trying to manipulate AI search results, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it did.
How does this affect you?
The update’s finished, so if you want to check how your site’s performing, look at your Search Console data from after 21 August. Compare it to the weeks before 18 August to see if anything’s genuinely changed.
If you did see a dip, don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either. Have an honest look at your site against Google’s spam guidelines (duplicate content, redirects, stuffed keywords, that sort of thing). If something needs fixing, fix it. Just know that Google can take a few months to notice you’ve cleaned up your act and give your rankings a boost back.
Final thoughts
This was a small one, so there are no new rules to learn and (probably) no need to overhaul your website. Just see it as Google getting its house in order ahead of the end of Summer.
