Google’s February 2026 Discover Update: What it means for your business.

Google has just finished rolling out its first big update of 2026.
It started on 5 February and wrapped up 21 days later, and it’s a little different this time. What makes it stand out is that it only affects Google Discover, not standard Google Search results.
What is Google Discover?
When you open the Google app on your phone and see a feed of news stories and articles that seem tailored to your interests, that’s Google Discover. It sends traffic to a lot of websites, often without people even searching for anything.
What actually changed?
Google says the update is designed to make Discover more useful. This means:
- Pushing local content to the front. Google will now show more content from websites that are based in the same country as the user. So if you’re a UK-based business writing for a UK audience, that’s good news.
- Cutting out clickbait. Those exaggerated, misleading headlines designed to trick you into clicking? Google wants less of that, which can only be a good thing.
- Rewarding real knowledge. Sites that have built up genuine, in-depth content around a specific topic will be recognised for it. Google gave a good example: a local news site with a strong gardening section could be seen as an expert on gardening. But a film review site that wrote one gardening article won’t be.
Who does this affect right now?
At the moment, the update only applies to English-language users in the US, but Google has said it will roll out to other countries and languages over the coming months, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.
What should you do?
If you get a decent chunk of traffic from Google Discover, here’s what we’d recommend:
- Check your Discover traffic in Google Search Console and look for any changes since early February.
- Make sure your site has clear, consistent content around the topics that matter most to your business. The more depth you can show in your area, the better.
- Have a read through Google’s updated Get on Discover help page — they’ve made a few tweaks to it alongside this update.
